The first generation of child proof prescription lids killed a lot of elderly and chronically ill.

The first gen were just the lock and it was stronger than the one now. For about 5 years old people died prematurely because they couldn’t open their meds and gave up. A few children died because frustrated elders moved pills to easily opened containers. After estimates of over 100,000 deaths, the lids were redesign to allow one side to be easy on, easy off. Doesn’t take much to make government admit it was wrong.

Totally. When I was a baby I used to be babysat by my mom’s twin sister. I had an uncanny ability for finding perfume bottles, opening them, and drinking them. Probably for the alcohol content, nobody knows. It drove my aunt crazy because there was nowhere to hide the bottles that I wouldn’t eventually sniff out and track down.

Some babies can (my niece was better at it than any of us). And they can also douse an entire room with oil in a matter of seconds, or any other horrible substance they get their little paws on.

Child-proof caps aren’t for safety on those things, they are for the poor tortured parents who don’t want to replace the carpeting a second time.
