It’s like a Metal Gear Solid villain, “Spear Buzzard” or something like that.
The Roman Pilum did just that – it was designed (allegedly) to bend or break on impact. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilum
Huh. Interesting. I never knew someone took that sorta thing into consideration.
Yeah, they were pretty smart. It could bend in a person’s body, so if they tried to remove it, they couldn’t.
‘it’ being the tip.
Yeah, when the consequence is being killed, people tend to put a lot of thought into it.
Fun fact: Roman spears did pretty much self destruct on impact.
What could nerd bug have done to provoke such a reaction?
What HASN’T Nerd Bug done to provoke such a reaction?
What you need to do is make the self destruct charge powerful enough to… umm….
Nah, just throw grenades.
… in fact, forget all that. Just blow up the whole planet.
Great, I didn’t finish reading the comic first and just ordered a whole tub of spears off the internet. THANKS, Adam!
What am I gonna do with all these spears now?
Barring any anatomical suggestions, where should I put them?
“Barring any anatomical suggestions,” lolol. I’d say your attic, hall closet, or possibly a non-functioning bathtub.
Save ‘em for the zombie apocalypse. Should be a useful weapon. I have yet to see a zombie throw a spear effectively.
That’s been my ex-spear-ience too
Wow. That pun was Shakespearean.
Fun fact: The pilum used by the Romans was a spear with an iron tip mounted on a wooden shaft in such a way that it would either bend or detach on impact if it couldn’t pierce the target. So, no throwing back. Plus, an armorer could put it back together “after the battle”, so no waste either.
“Fun” fact: Roman spears were kind of self-destructing. Their heads fell off after hit, so that the enemy wouldn’t use them.
That’s why harpoons had a rope attached. Of course, now, “research ships” use exploding heads on their harpoons.
Self-destructing spears! Love it!
I’m sure there’s a “Mission Impossible: Stone Age” parody in there somewhere!
“This spear will self destruct in ugg seconds…”
Ok–as a nerd I feel compelled to point out that for just this reason many spears did have self-destruct devices. specifically a soft part that bent on impact. This would help drag down an enemies shield and stop it being thrown back. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilum
Ha! Chihiro couldve used some of those
Forgot to ask (Not being familiar with the abbrev): What’s a P.S.A.? Google is my friend but there are tons of possibilities and I heavily doubt that you meant a prostate-specific antigen.
I assume it means, “Public Service Announcement”. See below for your educational pleasure. ^^
This was the main design flaw of my “gun gun”.
Is it just me or do the bugs look different? Thinner? It’s something.
Yeah. I’m experimenting with making subtle changes. If I were a braver cartoonist, I’d draw them with very little consistency; like, in a Ralph Steadman kind of way.
Well, this comic is just spear delight.
Adam you should know that you force me to start every morning with a laugh, also great reference in the title.
Adam overlooks the advantage of spear when used as a pike. You never run out of spear that way.
Just saying if you want to be fair to the silent and sometimes long distance killer that have graced the pages of human history for generations upon bloody generation.
And bugs in pike formation? Fuhgeddaboutit! They could match any bug adversary including bug God himself! Bug God blasphemy is a victimless crime.
Just pray that once a zombie is kabobed through the front he doesn’t have a sudden desire to walk backwards. Don’t know about you, but I’d be so amazed at a backward walking zombie with a spear sticking out of him I’d probably become part of the kabob.
Adam! Was this inspired by Mount & Blade: Warband? Cuz this is EXACTLY the case in multiplayer xD
PSA? Most of these would make the punchline… http://www.acronymfinder.com/PSA.html
I’m quite fond of “Penguin Secret Agency”
if ur skilled enough for weapons that arent guns by all means please please use them its kool wen people have have talents that take real training and skill to be able to handle and if not .. AK47! 50cal. SNIPE ! and DESERT EAGLES ! XD
I like it, I just imagine that they both decided to go on a diet. A diet which will soon consist of doughnuts and pizza.
Remember: Spears don’t spear people. People spear people!
wrt panel #1 – ever wondered why they invented the boomerang?
In addition to the Roman Pilum, which bent upon impact, many war javelin designs have a weak point in the center which makes the likely to shatter if they hit the ground or anything harder than flesh. You can tell a war javelin from a hunting one because the latter lacks the weak spot.
Most of the weapons/tools we think of today as spears where never intended to be thrown anyway. They were long reach thrusting weapons. Six inches of steel/iron/bronze was pricy back in the day and flint even more so. You’d only it throw it at an enemy/prey in desperation.
