Worth noting that in the country to your immediate north, the FIRST of July ALSO has an explosives theme.

It kind of dosen’t count on a large scale, i mean, when was the last time someone set up (or saw a neighbor do it) a fireworks show for new year’s eve in their own neighbourhood?

Not sure how people do it in the USA, but I’ve seen backyard fireworks on new years in several countries.

In my area, about 1 in 4 put on a giant New Year’s show. The other 3 are attending the show(s) put on by their neighbors.

And Dec 31 – Jan 1 seems to have an explosives theme in a lot of places

I tend to find that fireworks at the end of December/start of January are more a ‘one and done’ single celebratory bang than anything perpetual like the first and fourth of July.

Where I used to live the fireworks lasted from 11pm to 3am from people’s yards (and continued on a slow burn until Jan 7 while people fired off the surplus)

Of course, technically, the holiday isn’t for New Year’s Eve and it’s explosive bits. It’s for the hangover.

In Hawaii, New Year’s Eve is even more explosives-themed than the 4th. There was only one person setting off fireworks in my neighborhood two days ago, but on New Years, everyone and their mother is setting off fireworks late into the night. Before the fireworks ban a few years ago, it used to be that you legitimately couldn’t even see a block away by midnight because there was so much smoke from all the explosives. You couldn’t even see the fireworks anymore, they were just flashes of light in the smog. Now visibility only decreases by about half on New Years Eve instead of becoming virtually nothing. 99% of the fireworks are illegal.

As for the take on oversized rodent day, I am with that.
Strangely Bill Murray didn’t do that in the namesake movie even though it would have upped the ratings considerably.
