Amen! I’d like to know the evolutionary explanation for stress, if there even is one. It doesn’t seem very useful.

      Just remember: you asked.

Stress is meant as a short term solution to a pressing matter such as a predator or a natural disaster.

The increased levels of cortisol and norepinephrine hightens you physical performance and perception.

However, if you keep being stressed out for a longer period of time then you just wear out like a battery.

      Common symptoms of stress is:
      – anxiety
      – hopelessness
      – loss of short-term memory
      – drastic weight gain/loss
      – loss of short-term memory
      – forgetfulness

I thought that was the joke.

Well, intentional or not, it gave me great amusement.

Yes, the force of natural selection is all about right here, right now. If you want to live to 70, you’ve got to first survive the next five minutes. Stress is clearly a diversion of resources from the long-term to the short-term and a tradeoff of life-span for immediate survival.

It depends on why you are happy…if it is because you just drank a fifth of tequila then you get the side effect of people filming you dancing half-naked on the bar, and the lovely hangover with memory loss the next morning.

Depression does that too. Not necessarily the heart palpitations but definitely insomnia. Of course depression might be a relative of sadness and stress. Like a 2nd cousin or something.

It sometimes works in reverse, though. Getting a free doughnut would make you happy.

I love the little line thingy over the E in Eclair. It’s not an umlaut, but it’s something like that. Very grammatical of you, Adam.
And yes…wife/girl bug =ing happiness is very sweet. My wife makes me happy, I can only hope it goes back the other way too. I’ll know if she starts getting free doughnuts or something.

That’s an acute accent, on account of it being French (as opposed to a cute accent on account of it being, for example, Scottish).

I’ve come to believe that we experience so much stress today because people keep telling us we should be stressed, “because life is so stressful now.” They keep telling us that it’s wrong and unnatural to be stressed.

    Nonsense.

Each one of my grandparents lost at least one sibling back in the 1920s. That means each set of my great-grandparents experineced the ultimate human emotional pain of losing a child. Imagine living with the fear that every time your kid got the sniffles it was the precursor to a lethal illness that would sweep through the family killing every one you loved. That’s stress.

To live is to experience stress and pain just as to live is to experience pleasure and relaxation. If you think of “stressful” events as just a natural and normal part of life, then you actually experience less emotional and physiological stress.

This comic is four years old, it predicted the Disney movie “Inside Out” by three years… nicely done.
The Sequel “Turned Inside Out” is the sequel here. Disney took a dark turn.
