Pirate ships didn’t make people walk the plank in real life. If they wanted someone overboard, why go to the trouble of preparing the plank when they could just throw them overboard?

Which is nicely explained in Baggywrinkles #4: http://nauticry.wordpress.com/2013/05/14/baggywrinkles-4-is-here/

While rare, it *did* occur (there are historical records), as, perhaps, a sadistic form of entertainment, or as revenge by mutineers against brutal, sadistic officers.

While I don’t actually know how much the plank was ever used, it would provide the advantage of being harder to grab onto post-push and it being easier for people to foil said grabbing attempts.

I suspect the usual method of moving them along was a few lashes with the ‘cat,’ or a poke in the butt with a cutlass, but Adam’s depiction of a frustrated sigh is so much more entertaining.

I just pictured Pirates Of The Carribean having a soundtrack produced by Tom Jones…

I see no earrings on the bug pirates. Do we ever see bugs with earrings? Anyone? Bueller? No ears on bugs, hence no earrings?

Is it easier to walk a diving board than a plank?

Yeah, I was going to say, the first Tom Jones joke in ages that isn’t older’n Tom Jones himself.

      Or something.

Strangely, most sailors in those days couldn’t swim one bit.
