    I agree with TB Tabby Christmas is a giant competition and there are certainly a lot more. For example: At least in Germany it is (amongst catholics) a tradition to tidy up the graves (put flowers, gravelights and what not on it) of your relatives for the procession on all hallows (tomorrow) and there is definitely a competitive component in there (more in sense of “im not going to be the one everybody talks smack about at the graveyard”).
