    The answer was pretty much just panel 3. It’s the main reason why the average life span was so low back then.

    Cavemen did have a lot of babies in anticipation of losing some, but it wasn’t because they had neglectful fathers. Neanderthalian times were significantly more dangerous than the modern day, so if your kid went goofing off unsupervised, the kid was as likely to become an orphan as to end up dying.

    That being said, I am nonetheless firmly of the opinion that panel 4 was necessary until the invention of caffeine.

    I think that if I point out that always having caffeine isn’t actually any more effective than always having caffeine (having it *occasionally* or *occasionally* having a larger dose is effective), I am being too logical and ruining the fun. So instead I’ll point out that there were generally a lot more adults involved in the raising of any child.
