“Properly read, the Bible is the most potent force for atheism ever conceived.” (saac Asimov)

Put simply, atheism is the lack of belief in ANY divinity, not just a lack of devotion to mainstream belief systems. There are some people who use “atheism” as a lump descriptor for those who have individual beliefs with which they are completely unfamiliar, but the individuals themselves wouldn’t describe themselves as atheist because they do believe in a divinity, regardless of how few people they know who share it.

@DTIBA I believe the early Roman Christians were called “atheists” by the pagan Romans for not believing in the Roman pantheon.

Well, the word just means “godless”, so before it became a label in its own right, it was probably used as a general “nonbeliever”.

Weirdly enough, Every self proclaimed atheist I’ve met online had an elitist holier than thou attitude that they were somehow better than me because they didn’t go to church or believe in the existence of god.
I don’t get that from Adam though, I get more of an I’m to lazy to go to church feeling. If Atheism had any sort of ceremonies or religious meetings you had to attend, I doubt he would be athiest.

This is not so much an attribute of atheism but of having been converted from some previous world view. Most atheists are in a sense “born again”, and indeed some are as enthusiastic as born again Christians when it comes to talking about it.

As a Jew, this is fairly accurate.

There’s the issue of being ostracized by friends and family. In some parts of the world, it can get you thrown in jail or even killed outright.
