I just went to a Sofapalooza two months ago.

It helped; at the end, we left the couch stuck in the doorway. It was a protest against society’s desperate compulsion to eliminate natural imperfection.

I have a hippie for a son (well, step son) who lives in Hawaii. It’s all “Peace n love, man.” “Look at that sunset, man” … sure those things are all nice and good, but you really gotta do more than lay around toking weed and preaching about sunsets…man.

One thing that it seems was overlooked was hippies and the Constitution. It appears that they’re the only ones who are concerned enough about the trashing of it to speak up; not politicians, lawyers, military personnel sworn to protect it…I hope they get enough “regular joes” on board at some point to say, “I got your back.”

First they came for the hippes, but I was not a hippie so I said nothing…

LanceThruster, thanks for speaking up. It was not until South Park bewilderingly start using Hippie as if it were a negative that this crap started in pop culture. (the irony being, that the freedoms that make SP possible are among those most aggressively fought for by the Hippie Movement.) It was originally only conservatives who tried to apply revisionist hostory and make it seem like drugs and free love were all that existed during that movement, but now corporate media is making everyone else buy into it….

    • LanceThruster
      LanceThruster
      February 1, 2012, 2:55 pm | # | Reply

Oldskool – I very much appreciate your recognition of such. I think of the “hippie movement” everytime I see an ad about what good corporate citizens one firm or another supposedly is (think ~ “Who care’s about the environment? At Chevron,we do.” – another that comes to mind was from either “Groove Tube” or “Kentucky Fried Movie” where an oil company ad spoof had a voice-over talking about all the pollution its company was said to cause to the air and lakes, streams, oceans, beaches, and wide open spaces while they showed images of blue skies, crystal clear waters, and sparkling shorelines and ended with the voice over stating – “so we spent millions of dollars…to make this commercial.” ).

One has to remember that corporations had to be dragged kicking and screaming to even pretend to be “good” corporate citizens. Now, lying sack of crap faux-libertarians crow about how bad regulations are and that corps are naturally good corporate citizens because not to be would supposedly affect their bottom line.

It’s not entirely untrue to say that when you breathe clean air or drink clean water…thank a hippie.

Btw, a bit of historical trivia…based on how hippies were mocked for their starry-eyed utopian “peace and love” mentality, an unoffical name for punks and the punk rock movement (which I love for the music regardless) was “hippie’s revenge”

The “hippies and Constitution” connection is from the current OWS movement as much as anything but the original hippes also had their push for social justice (certainly denying civil rights and illegal wars violates the Constitution).

The reason why their drugs are considered verboten is because Big Pharma can’t as easily get their piece of the action. As far as crime, what is being done to the Constitution IS a crime. Furthermore, marijuana is still classified as a schedule I drug (same as heroin) by DEA (see: http://www.justice.gov/dea/agency/penalties.htm) which is nothing short of asinine. It is shameful that, while pot is actually quite effective in treating certain ailments (see: http://patients4medicalmarijuana.wordpress.com/2009/05/18/in-pot-we-trust/ and http://www.salem-news.com/articles/december122011/ptsd-israel-pl.php ).

It is the 75th anniv of the movie “Reefer Madness” which was pushed to sell papers and to alarm the population from the supposed pot threat as a drug of minority blues musicians.

If you use tobacco or alchohol, you are using DRUGS. Prohibitions creates more problems than it supposedly solves. Prescription meds cause much damage, death, and addiction themselves and have their own issues with illegal usage unrelated to “hippies” (think Rush Limbaugh and Michael Jackson).

Btw, I have pot smoking friends who’ve smoked daily with no serious health problems and family member cigarette smokers who the large portion have already died prematurely and horribly so spare me your “don’t do drugs” platitudes.

POS Mitt Romney is not honest, or productive, and only pays what taxes he and his lobbyists could not have removed from the tax code.

I’m far less concerned about the damage to me and society from DFHs (dirty f#cking hippies) than I am from the political goon squads propping up the plutocracy/kleptocracy.

What is referred to as “hippie punching” is just more lazy thinking.

(This is awesome. I love when bug comic discussions go into completely serious mode as opposed to just, “Adam rocks!” ~~ though in all fairness…Adam *does* rock and bug comic is its own brand of awesome).

Alternative medicine (or holistic remedies), by it’s very definition, has either not been proven to work, or BEEN proven NOT to work. You know what they call alternative medicine that has been PROVEN to work? They call it MEDICINE. – Tim Minchin

Anywho, I dig the fern reference! It shows to me that Bug is not just a front man for a non-sequitur strip but a character that has some continuity behind him… KEEP TRYING BUG! YOU’LL CLAIM THOSE FERNS ONE DAY DAMNIT!!

Ummm…no. That is not true in all cases. Hospitals used to have a higher infant mortality rate for childbirth than midwives because doctors thought they looked especially doctory to have all that blood and pus on their surgeon’s aprons. It wasn’t til Lister made the connection for transmission of infections that things improved.

The “holistic herbal health hippies” was merely for the sake of alliteration.

If you opened the links I provided for medical marijuana, you’d see undeniable evidence of their effectiveness.

I accept your forthcoming apology (if not, you care not for facts *or* science).

Oh…my bad…In the mid 1800’s alternative medicine and health practices were all the rage, and effective!. Lord have mercy I had gone astray. Thanks for setting me right. Your logic is undeniable indeed.

Little tidbit FOR your side btw, maggots, at one point, WERE a form of alternative treatment for soldiers in the civil war and I think the revolution (don’t quote me on that one, can’t readily remember), due to their tendencies to eat the decaying and dead flesh rather than the healthy stuff around wounds thus at least prolonging the time before really bad infections, and other stuff would rear up. Some people saw this and now Maggots, while not WIDELY used, are a form FDA approved treatment. My big quarrel is with non-FDA approved treatments that people sell like it’s a bottle of excedrin, when in reality they have just as little idea about it’s affects than the other person, they just know that they took one one day and then felt good a little while later with no other real connection.

As far as medical marijuana goes I could care less. Marijuana does more damage to your alveoli than cigarette smoke, but thats just because of the tendency for people to hold it into their lungs longer (fact: Smoke…of ANY kind…is not un-harmful, or good for your lungs) but other than that it’s not a big deal, and even then so it’s still not as carcinogenic as cigarettes, which is a huge plus.

But, brother, if you’re going to try to rebuttal an argument I made about CURRENT medicine (which in reality was just a quote from a beat poem that I thought was cute) then at least use an example from CURRENT medicine, not an archaic anecdote from 160 years ago when some doctors were doctors just because they were the only ones in the town who owned a white coat.

    Hippy…. 😛

I wasn’t defending the whole of alternative medicine but battle whatever strawman you see fit. And I don’t think you understand what “holistic” actually entails. Nutrition, emotional well-being, and preventive approaches are all *proven* in maintaining optimal health. (see: http://www.holistic-wellness-basics.com/ ). Cancer studies show patients’ optimism about recovery success play a part in effective treatment.

If you saw the documentary “In Pot We Trust”, you *would* care (unless you’re really as clueless or callous as in the way you present yourself) because you’d see the draconian set of laws are preventing people from utilizing an effective remedy for their ailments. The Lister example was just a quick off the top reference to show your blanket statement was false (maggots aside). Get all smug if you want as you appear insecure enough to require it, but my observations stand on their own merit. While I did have long hair in the day, I never was much of a joiner and did not embody the whole hippy “peace & love” mystique, but I know to give credit where credit is due.

Big Pharma Tool…(and that’s from someone who is a product of better living through pharmacological chemistry).
