We don’t use flamethrowers because (A) it’s horrible for the environment, and (B) it’s horribly inefficient. It will always take less energy to move snow than to melt it. https://what-if.xkcd.com/130/

Don’t bother. He’s convinced his literalism is part of the fun and it’ll just upset him if you challenge that.

No, what upsets me is people who insult me and assume I won’t notice. In this particular instance, I’m not being literal so much as I’m trying to spread interest in a relevant topic without posting a contextless link and looking like a spammer.

Actually the real problem is that the melted snow would just refreeze, but now it’s a solid sheet of ankle-breaking ice.

Sadly it is not ankles that get broken but wrists and hips. Fractures are mostly of the spinal compression kind or the concussive noggin kind. But the majority of injuries are sprains and strains to muscles and ligaments as you body attempts to avoid getting those bones broken.

Heh. I was thinking of that one with this. Always kinda neat to see the same idea pop up in multiple places.

Here in Berlin I’ve seen workers using small flamethrowers to remove weeds in the sidewalk.

But it probably takes less energy to burn up a weed than it does to melt snow.

The reason that Germans burn weeds is because the hideous chemicals that are easy to buy in the U.S. are illegal here.

I often fantasize about using flamethrowers to melt snow.

I even wonder about mounting two on my car (pointed downwards) so that I can melt the snow on the road in front of me as I drive. However, that might have the unintended consequence of melting my tires. Plus, the temptation of using them on the car in front of me (who doesn’t move when the light turns green) would be too great.

I constantly fantasize about using a flamethrower to melt my bosses…

Unfortunately extreme heat over short periods of time has little effect on inert mass.

Someday we will find a practical use for the average Joe’s flamethrower… until then, there are heated driveway systems now… basically radiant heat flooring systems for your driveway or sidewalk… just flip a switch and watch your neighbors turn blue/green from envy.

And afterwards they turn white when they see your energy bill?

Adam should never be allowed near a flamethrower. The number of creative ways he could come up with that would cause incidental havoc and harm is mind numbing.

If flamethrowers became common, the card would, too, complete with percentages.

Good thing Adam doesn’t live in a place with much snow… oh wait.
Also, would he take it in such stride if his neighbor got a snow-melting flamethrower first and burned him accidentally?
