I guess the US might not like to see taxpayers go, so renouncing citizenship must be harder than leaving the Catholic church. There you have to send a letter clearly stating that you’ve still got your wits about you and are fully prepared to accept eternal damnation. Upon acceptance (not guaranteed), they’ll fetch the baptism register and write “has requested deletion” next to your name. They won’t even strike you out.
Religion has trouble accepting the idea that there are people who don’t share their beliefs, but region outright refuses to accept the idea of people who don’t want to remain in their territory (statement accuracy may vary on both counts).
