Also, raisins are not the worst thing I’ve ever gotten. The elderly couple near my house smelled like some diabolical combination between old soap and moth balls, and they gave out pennies. Pennies. One cent to every child.
When I was a kid I thought they were just mean, but as I got older I realized the genius of it–they never got any trick-or-treater more than once in a lifetime, and no one ever pranked them on Devil’s Night because they were elderly and infirm.
They probably weren’t mean, they just weren’t adjusting for inflation. In their day, they were lucky to be given pennies. They could go buy candy and comics and hoops and perhaps a stick to roll it with.
