Am I the only one who reads the Villain Bug lines in a French accent?

Maybe – but I definitely think he’s about to raise my rent or evict me in a period melodrama.

Actually a lot of friendly enemies became pretty popular characters in fiction. There’s something about polite evil who treat you like friend while trying to stab you.

Wait… is the title a Courtship of Eddie’s Father reference?! Had to get in the WABAC machine for that one, Adam!

Yeah, and thanks, now I’ve got the stupid thing stuck in my head.

Panel 4 reminds me of the endodontist who offered to let me watch TV or a video during my root canals. He recommended “Mr. Bean Visits the Dentist.” Not “Marathon Man.”

The third panel reminds me of the fencing scene in The Princess Bride. I love it!

The second panel reminds me of my wife. For someone who works in accounting, she uses the term “situational awareness way to much.

BTW, the concept of “freinemies” shows up in evolution psychology as coopertition, the idea that the laws of natural selection program us that even as we cooperate with others were still in competition with them to get at least a 51% to 49% split of the cooperation payout in favor. It’s one of the foundations of the behavior of humans and other social animals.

Some researchers have hypothesized that’s why so many people find reality game shows compelling despite their acknowledged contrived absurdity. They often model the simultaneous cooperation and competition at the root of our behavior in a way that fiction seldom does.

But since reality TV helped kill Firefly, I will never forgive it.

Historical figures had this going for them. Friendly mail to opposing generals or national leaders while leading thousands of people in a war.

Or a frenemy can just be a rival. Whichever works.
