Adam, the trick is: Once you’re old enough, you can say you don’t drink __anymore__ (which I assume is technically correct; I don’t drink alcohol, but I’ve had a beer on occasion) In a culturally aware environment you could also try growing a beer and then rephrase your statement to “sorry, __we__ dont do alcohol”. This will make people uneasy to inquire more details
I’ve done this, slightly modified, for most of my adult life. I just say that i used to get really hammered in my teen years and dont wanna suffer through that again. It helps if i mention I’ve got alcoholics on both sides of my family (brings up the heredity angle thou i believe genetics has been tossed out)
Kinda funny, it often gives the impression that I’m a recovering alcoholic, even thou I’m not.
All apologies to actual alcoholics out there that are trying to recover and live day to day.
I feel this. It’s also weird being the only one who’s drinking but not actually “drunk”. I may have a couple drinks, certainly not enough to get drunk, but then everyone around me is wasted and expecting me to be the same way because I’m holding a drink.
Back in my heavy drinking days (early 90s, going through a divorce, etc. etc.) I decided not to drink one night when out with my “pals”. I apologized profusely throughout the night to the bartender, who was a young lady, for how rude my “pals” were and for myself if I was that way when I was drinking with them. I asked how she could smile and be so nice to us when it was apparent that we were all “instant @$$holes, just add beer” types of guys. It really opened my eyes to how relatively normal guys turned into raging JERKS when we’d be drinking just a little bit. Wow.
I’ve only been drunk a couple times since that night, and never on purpose (I don’t miss those hangover days at work one tiny bit). I do still drink, mostly beer, and I am a homebrewer, but I reign it in after maybe two or possibly three beers. I’d say I average maybe 1 to 2 beers a week, and that’s it.
Actually, the majority of my friends won’t pressure me to drink and if I have been drinking and they buy me one and I don’t want it, they’ll just give it to someone else.
You might just have crappy friends.

I don’t think growing your own beer is going to convince people that you don’t drink.
